With labor points being consumed for gathering resources and crafting it is clear that ArcheAge is not going to be a game where everyone can craft anything (cough TESO) So, I wanted to put this out there so guild members can start thinking about what role they are going to fill come launch.
Proficiencies (Crafting Skills)
You start gaining proficiency in these crafts by performing an activity related to it – fish to gain fishing, steal to gain larceny you get the point.
Here is how http://www.archeagegame.com explains the level up process:
At 10,000 points in a Proficiency, it will be capped until you choose to unlock that specific skill as a specialization. You can raise any number of Proficiencies to 10,000, but from there specializations are limited – only 5 can reach 20,000, only 4 can reach 30,000, only 3 can reach 40,000, and only 2 can reach the maximum current amount of 50,000 points. (It’s possible to increase specializations, and maximum skill is subject to change.)
Specializing a proficiency decreases the amount of labor you spend doing an activity as well as icreases you speed at it. You will also increase your chances of finding rare items.
Here is a listing of the current proficiencies as well as a brief description (Also borrowed from http://www.archeagegame.com) :
