Yes, I’m positing the idea of a “safe space” where everyone is constructive and happy as a counterpoint because that’s what I feel would the opposite of this situation. But, yes, I think the reality is that gaming will always be a breeding ground for these kind of toxic douchenozzles. Part of it is because anything that creates passion will always motivate these kinds of extreme and simplistic arguments of “YOU SUCK AND YOU DESERVE TO DIE” (I’m thinking sports in particular), and part of it is because due to how gaming in particular works it tends to garner people who glamourize extreme, unfiltered emotion as something “cool”.
What I think is, the only possible way to manage these kinds of people is, on the one hand enforcing community guidelines in forums and the such, but on the other accepting these kinds of reactions and not letting them get to you. I can’t think of any way to cull these mindsets other than just show how little of an effect have on people. You know these guys are more than looking for an outlet, hoping to cause a reaction. Taking that from them is what defuses them. While there’s sometimes the rare occasion for a mega-cool riposte, more often than not you’ll only manage to let yourself get dragged in by responding to that.
